How to spot a Jap

I found this website that featured a comic-like guide written for American soldiers by the United States Army during World War II. It detailed how to distinguish between the Chinese (America’s wartime allies) and the Japanese (the enemies).
While racist and highly offensive (yet oddly funny), it did made me think about America’s analysis of its enemies during times of war - i.e. In Iraq.
Think about it.

Every year, I bring in examples of this sort of racist propaganda to my art history classes and the students are shocked. It's sort of amazing how we've completely glossed over this part of our history. Most of the students don't even know about internment camps, which is really surprising to me. A big chunk of my extended family is Japanese and most of their relatives spent time in the camps, so it's one of those things I always knew about growing up. But I think if you don't have that experience, you often know know about the history at all.
